Frasassi Caves

The caves of Frasassi are karstic caves underground situated inside the regional natural Park of the Throat of the “Gola della Rossa” and Frasassi in the city of Genga (AN).
The discovery of the caves of Frasassi begins on June 28th 1948 when some components of the “Speleological Group of Marche” discovered the entry of the first cave named "Cave of the River." Other discoveries follow this one in the years 1950 and 1960 to works of the groups of the CAI (Italian Club Alpino) of Jesi and Fabriano among which in 1966 a long ramification more than 1 km that departs from the Cave of the River.
Inside the hollow karstik can be admired some natural sculptures formed him to work of calcareous stratifications during 190 million years thanks to the work of the water and the rock. The water flowing on the limestone dissolves small quantities of limestone and falling to the ground, during a dripping that lasts some millennia, it deposits her and form of the concretions of notable dimensions and forms at times also curious. These are divided in stalagmites (columns that grow progressing upward from the lower part) and stalactites (what instead I go down from the ceiling of the hollow).
The form and the dimensions of these natural works have stimulated the imagination of the speleologists, which you/they have her after having her discoveries "you baptize" denominating her in curious way, between the stalactites and the most famous stalagmites we remember: the "Giants", the "Camel" and the "Dromedary", the "Orsa", her "Madonnina", her "Sword of Damocle" (stalactite of 7,40 ms of height and 150 cms of diameter), "you Fall of the Niagara", her "Slice of bacon" and her "Slice of lard", the "Obelisk" (tall stalagmite 15m to the center of the Room 200), the "Reeds of organ" (concretions conic-lamellari that if you strike they play again), the "the Witches' Castle."
Inside the caves they are also present of the little ponds in which it stagnates the water of the dripping and the "wells", deep cylindrical hollow up to 25 ms that can pick up the water or to carry her/it toward plain inferior carsici.
